Dark Circles

Dark circles or bags under the eyes are telltale signs of ill health that may be caused due to any disease, stress or strain, fatigue, heredity, medication, or anemia. In most cases, dark circles under the eyes are essentially blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. This happens because the skin below the eyes is very thin.

Dark circle causes could be heredity. You might notice a bluish tint when blood passes through the large veins. The transparent skin can very thin, which make the circles appear darker. The other causes for dark circles could be anemia, deficiency of iron, and a poor diet. The dark circle is an indication that enough oxygen is not reaching the tissues of the body. Excessive exhaustion due to a hectic lifestyle will cause the skin to pale, resulting in dark circles. As one ages, the skin becomes translucent, making it darker. At times pigmentation causes dark circles as melanin is produced more under the eyes.

Dark Circle Treatment

  • Though there is no complete cure for dark circles under the eyes, there are many homemade remedies that will make the dark circles lighter. Let us take a look at some of them:
  • To begin with drink plenty of water and fluids to improve circulation and remove toxins. Avoid alcohol, smoking, and caffeinated drinks and consume whole foods, vegetables, and fruits.
  • Put tea bags, raw cucumber slices, or slices of potato on the closed eyes for about twenty minutes and wash your face with cold water.
  • A washcloth dipped in rosemary tea can also placed on the eyes as a beneficial dark circle remedy.
  • Another helpful dark circle treatment is to improve blood circulation by applying pressure around the eyes, moving from the inside to the outside.
  • Use cold compresses on the eyes to constrict the blood vessels and also reduce swelling of tissues, minimizing darkness.
  • The use of a moisturizer with vitamin C, an antioxidant, fennel, or licorice extract, which reduce inflammation and stabilize oxygen, is an effective dark circle treatment.
  • The application of the juice of tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, parsley, or lemons is a beneficial dark circle remedy.
  • Almond oil or vitamin E powder can be gently rubbed on the affected area and is an effective dark circle cure.
  • Lemon juice can be added to a little gram flour and applied around the eyes. This works as a gentle scrub and helps improve blood circulation.
  • Using eye creams with Epidermal Growth factor (EGF) is helpful in reducing dark circles.
  • Above all, get enough rest to restore general good health and also to reduce dark circles.
